Flared Gas Mining Faces Its First Independent Methane Audit
Operators have claimed emissions reductions for years. A field measurement programme is now testing the arithmetic.
An independent measurement programme has begun sampling combustion efficiency at wellhead mining sites that generate power from gas which would otherwise be flared, testing a claim central to the sector's environmental case.
The argument rests on combustion efficiency. A flare that burns incompletely releases methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide produced by complete combustion; reciprocating engines running generators are claimed to burn more completely than an open flare.
Field measurement has historically been scarce, with most published figures derived from manufacturer specifications rather than site sampling. Early results from the programme suggest real-world efficiency varies widely with maintenance practice.
Operators participating in the audit say they welcome measured numbers because the sector's credibility currently rests on modelled ones. Those declining to participate did not respond to requests for comment.
